Obituary for Susan Chung

Susan (Sui Yuen) Chung (nee Chin) passed away on Friday, February 10, 2017 after her battle with pancreatic cancer. She was born on October 1, 1946 in Cheung En Haa, a small rural village in Canton (Guangdong), China.

She lived in the times of the “Great Leap Forward” in China where people in rural areas were being oppressed and tortured or killed for low productivity. Susan, along with five friends, decided to flee from China to Hong Kong. They literally clawed their way to freedom, crawling through rivers during the night, escaping soldiers and dogs.

She made it to Hong Kong with one of her friends where she stayed for a month before migrating to Jamaica, and eventually met her husband there. Susan’s quiet strength helped her survive her flight from China, and continued through battling her illness till her final breaths. She adored being surrounded by family and friends and was grateful for each moment spent with them.

Susan is survived by her loving husband of 53 years, Ronald Chung; four children, Suzette (Richard) Khan, Lisa (Wayne) Lowe, Darren (Teresa) Chung, and Nicole Chung; close niece Eugenie (Patrick) Chung; nine grandchildren, Rayanne, Phillip, Ashley, Alyssa, Alexis, Kaitlyn, Elliott, Lauren, and Riley; her two brothers, Chin Ju Qu and Chin Chung Qu; and two sisters, Chin Bit Yun and Chin Gen Yun. She also leaves behind many other family and friends who loved and cared for her dearly.

The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to either the Canadian Cancer Society or the Canadian Diabetes Association in Susan Chung’s name.
