When I think of Harry, I think of one thing - imam bayildi. Literally, it means "the priest fainted". It is a vegetarian dish made with eggplant. So the story goes, when the priest tasted this dish, it was so good, he fainted.

Imam bayildi remains one of my top 5 best things I have ever eaten. You can serve it as a main dish. You can serve it as a side dish. You can serve it hot. You can serve it cold. It is fantastic. I remember watching Harry prepare this dish, while Mrs. Hagopian offered a running commentary on everything he was doing. Harry never flinched or said a word. He just kept on cooking.

Harry gave us the recipe years ago. Whenever we made it, the dish never tasted like Harry's, even though we follwed the recipe faithfully. I am sure Harry never deliberately left anything out. I now know that there was one special thing missing when we made it, and that was Harry.

We loved Harry so very much. He was like a mentor to me when I served on staff at Stone Church years ago. Over the years we've kept in touch often enjoying meals at Harry and Josie's home. We will miss this man who was stately, disciplined, godly, and a role model. Harry was one of the kindest individuals I ever met. He was also one of the hardest working people I knew. We will miss him but look forward to one day seeing him again.

It was such a privilege knowing Harry. I enjoyed his sense of humor and joy of life. He was such a gentleman and a true helpmate to you, Josie. I remember the last time I saw him when the three of us went out for lunch and he picked the menu items at his favorite Armenian restaurant.
