Obituary for Yuen Ling Monica TANG

It is with profound sadness to inform you that our beloved sister, Monica Tang, passed away peacefully on Monday, July 16, 2018 at Scarborough General Hospital in Toronto, Canada, at the age of 61. She is survived and will be lovingly remembered by her sister, Maria, brother, Peter, sister-in-law, Abbie and nephews, Nickolas & Dominic.
Monica was a graduate of St. Mary’s Canossian College. After that, she studied at Northcote College of Education and upon graduation, she was recruited to join Wah Yan College Kowloon where she began her career in education in 1978. She mainly taught English at junior forms and during her teaching years in WYK, she whole-heartedly devoted her time and energy in nourishing the young boys. She strived to maintain excellence in teaching and took a break to complete an undergraduate degree in Education at University of East Anglia attaining First Class Honour. She left WYK in 1994 and emigrated to Toronto, Canada. She first worked as a legal clerk and in other odd jobs. As she was so passionate about teaching, she struggled hard to get a place in the Toronto District School Board to continue her teaching career in 2001. After teaching for a short period at Don Valley Middle school, she landed at Zion Heights Middle School where she taught for nearly a decade. She had taught various subjects including History, Geography, Arts and English, which she particularly loved. To continue her pursuit for excellence, she studied for Master of Education at University of Toronto.
Her areas of concern were students from the ethnic minorities and the underprivileged who are determined to learn. She put what she learnt into practice by going to China to do voluntary teaching for a few summers. She also participated in the Tin Shui Wai Project, a teaching scheme for the poor and the neglected initiated by an alumnus from WYHK, as an overseas distance learning tutor.
Outside her teaching ring, Monica spent a lot of time in community services including spending a few years during weekends to drive all the way from Toronto to Kingston to provide religious and care services to prisoners there. She was also lector of Sunday mass at Holy Spirit Roman Catholic Church in Toronto and back at the time she was in Hong Kong, she helped to run the Sunday classes for children at the Rosary Church.
Monica was a cheerful, energetic and versatile person with different interests. She loved craftwork, pottery and she played sports like canoeing. She enjoyed travelling and she had footprints in most of Europe and North America and some Asian cities. She cared much about the Wah Yan community and treasured time spent with her students. Thus, she would always take part in student gatherings in both Toronto and Hong Kong.
Monica would be sorely missed and remembered by her family, friends, colleagues and students. May she rest in peace!
Maria Tang and Peter Tang, July 2018
