Obituary for Kin Lai Kiang

Heidi Kiang April 29, 1966 – April 18, 2018

Heidi Kiang died peacefully in the early hours of April 18, 2018 after a brave and lengthy struggle with cancer. She is survived by her mother Sun, brother Frank, sisters Wah and Ashley, and loving partner Keith.

Heidi was born in Hong Kong and graduated from the University of Hong Kong with a Master’s Degree in Social Work. She worked for the Hong Kong Social Welfare Department as a Probation Officer before coming to Canada’s in the early 1990’s.

Heidi was a talented social worker who had a distinguished career at the Children’s Aid Society of Toronto. Unfailingly gracious, she approached every challenge with quiet determination. She was regarded with affection and respect by children, families and colleagues as she progressed to a senior management position. Always curious, she was quick to volunteer for new initiatives that might help improve service or knowledge. She leaves behind an enduring impact in many areas of practice and policy including anti-oppression, adolescents and training.

In both good and poor health Heidi taught other’s much about grace, perseverance and acceptance. She inherited her mother’s love for art and anything creative, and this gave her comfort and focus as she battled through wave after unrelenting wave of difficult news and treatment. The family is forever grateful for the compassion of The Wellspring Birmingham Gilgan House, whose fine staff and philosophies helped support Heidi through her stress and physical challenges. She had attended their drawing class just days before her death.

Heidi brought a soft and gentle sparkle to all of her contacts with others that will be remembered always.

In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made to The Wellspring Birmingham Gilgan House (905) 257-1988.
